Can I cut out the section in my cabin underneath my bow on my 30ft Catalina sailboat?
I’m wanting to install a custom shower but i need to know if i can cutout the small sofa section safely to make room for the enclosure and standing room. Thanks in advance!
Cutting any panel requires full boxing to restore any lost strength – quite do-able but must be done right by someone who knows what they are doing. Structural members are cut only after plenty of planning and with full knowledge of potential consequences. The bow section of most boats is subject to the highest stress loadings and little is put there cosmetically – in some cases I have seen there is not enough bracing full stop to keep the weight down – the Sydney 32 is a good case in point with frightening levels of hull flex forward when driven hard to windward – even tube bracing would be good!
Without an opinion from the original builder or a qualified shipwright or marine architect you should be very careful.
