boats props

How will a badly nicked up prop effect my boat? Like this?
I have a 14′ aluminum fishing boat with an older (60′s) 25HP Johnson. It really starts and runs great except in the lake when I give it the gas it seems to only go half speed and won’t plane out. Yes, the prop is chewed up. I bought it this way. The previous owner told me it was that way for him always. It is a BIG old motor. Could it be too heavy and cause this? Although it sits in the water good. Possibly the lower unit? Compression is good. Plugs are good. Runs great.
Prop is badly nicked but what if that doesn’t solve the problem?
props are made to push water out at a certian degree of force. the way it does this is the blades are set to a certian “pitch”. if the blades are bent it wont push the water efficiently. i got a 14′ semi-v fishing boat with a 72′ model 25 johnson, and it will push me about 35 mph across the lake. my boat weighs aprox. 300 lbs., that with me, gas tank, trolling motor, two batteries, and outboard.
try servicing that prop, then have a technician look at your lower unit, it might be going out on ya. one other thing check to see how far down your motor sits down, it needs to sit where it is pushing straight towards the boat. too high and its actually pushing back of the boat down, robbing of forward thrust. too far down and it will be actually pushing back of boat up, also robbing you of forward thrust. these 25 horses have great amount of push to them, a 14 foot boat shouldn’t be a problem for it.
